The Virginia Department of Corrections is investigating the death of an inmate that occurred at Red Onion State Prison in the last week.

Director Harold Clarke stated in a news release that shortly after 2:30 Thursday afternoon, an inmate reported to staff that his cell partner fell out of his top bunk bed.

Staff entered the cell and found the man unresponsive, which prompted staff to perform lifesaving efforts.

The unresponsive inmate was transported to Dickenson Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Clarke added that the incident is being investigated by the Department of Correction’s Special Investigations Unit.
