PRINCETON, N.J. (JMU Athletics) – On a Friday night where James Madison men’s soccer (1-3-0) out-numbered No. 23 Princeton (2-0-1) in shots 16-14 and corner kicks seven-to-one, a goal in the 51st minute by the Tigers proved to be the difference as the Dukes fell 2-0 at Roberts Stadium.
JMU put forth a worthwhile effort offensively as eight players registered a shot, five of which had multi-shot outings. Carlos Cámara Tur led the Dukes’ offensive charge, putting four shots on the board and three shots on goal. Defensively, Erik Jaspers fared well in goal, coming up with four big saves, several of which came at opportune times for the Dukes.
Quoting Head Coach Paul Zazenski
“The 2-0 scoreline was not indicative of our performance,” said Zazenski. “We had 16 shots and six on goal with seven corners against a team that just beat the number three ranked team in the country by the same scoreline. We competed tonight and we are proud of the boys and their efforts. With a new group we need to build off of how we played tonight as there was nothing to hang our heads about. Now we prepare for a quick turnaround game on Monday.”
How It Happened
• JMU established themselves as the aggressors early on, creating an early chance for a score in the 2nd minute. Cámara Tur positioned himself for a header towards the goal but the save was made by Princeton.
• Later in the first half, the Tigers posted their first true offensive attack, launching a dangerous shot into the waiting arms of Jaspers, making his first save of the evening.
• Following a gritty first half, Princeton drew first blood in the second when Bardia Hormozi scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 51st minute.
• The Dukes hustled to find an equalizer, creating chances consistently from the 62nd minute on. Most notably, a third corner kick in three minutes of play led to a Brock Frasier shot that was saved by the Tigers.
• In the 82nd minute, Ikenna Nnawuchi was assessed a second yellow card of the match, putting the Dukes down to 10 men for the remainder of the contest.
• The Tigers scored a 90th minute goal off the foot of Hormozi to make it 2-0 and put the game out of reach for James Madison.
